2019 Nature’s Classroom Summer Day Camps

Black Bear, Black Bear, What Do You See? (formerly Young Naturalists Camp)
Cost:  $150.00
Exiting K - 2rd graders
Learn about bears and other animals from a beloved children’s book. We will learn about how we use our senses, and how these animals use the same senses to survive every day! Live animal experiences, crafts, making snacks, and story time will be included in each fun day. This camp is inspired by Eric Carle’s books; no characters will be present. Activities will be both indoor and outdoor (approximately 50/50 depending on weather).
Minimum of 15 students per session.

Diary of Not So Wimpy Animals
Cost: $150.00
Exiting 1st – 3rd graders
No such thing as a wimpy animal! Come explore invertebrates and vertebrates at the classroom and learn all their strengths. Animals need to be shrewd competitors in order to survive. Campers will explore a different group of animals each day through hands-on activities. Live animal experiences, crafts, making snacks, and story time will be included in each fun day. This camp is inspired by Jeff Kinney’s books; no characters will be present. Activities will be both indoor and outdoor (approximately 50/50 depending on weather). Minimum of 15 students per session.

Survival Camp (Primitive Skills)
Cost :  $150.00
Exiting 4th - 7th graders
Come on an outdoor adventure as you learn primitive survival skills in the Florida wilderness.  Work on individual and group shelter building techniques, learn how to create fire by using friction and other methods, study wild edible plants and discuss finding food in the wilderness, and talk about finding and conserving water away from civilization.  Additional topics may include: animal tracking, knot tying, cordage making, and a variety of fun and educational games to teach you about nature.  Minimum of 15 students per session.

Outdoor Skills Camp (Present Skills)
Cost :  $175.00
Exiting 5th - 8th graders
This camp will focus on many present-day activities and skills of the outdoors such as:  canoeing, tent camping, archery, hiking and orienteering/GPS, and camp-side activities.  (Cost includes canoe rental fee.)
Minimum of 15 students per session.
SWFWMD Water Adventure Camp
Cost:  $20
Exiting 4th - 7th grade
Come experience Florida’s amazing water resources, animals and plant communities within the Hillsborough River Watershed.  Participants will enjoy shoreline sampling, an off-site field trip to Crystal Springs Preserve, and other watershed related activities.  Priority will be giving to students that have not attended this camp in past summers. Each student is allowed to attend one session only. Minimum of 15 students per session.

Please note that if your child has partcipated in the SWFWMD camp last year or the year before, their applcation will be held, in order, until May 4th to allow first-time students the opportunity to sign up first.

WHERE:  All camps will be held at Nature’s Classroom Outdoor Environmental Studies Center, 13100 Verges Road, Thonotosassa, FL 33592 (located off Fletcher Avenue/Morris Bridge Road, approximately 1.5 miles east of I-75)

WHEN:  Programs will run from 8:00am - 3:00pm Monday through Thursday.  These are not sleep-over camps.  Parents are responsible for daily transportation of student(s).
        
DATES OF CAMPS:
                Session 1:      June 10 - 13 (Black Bear, Outdoor Skills, and SWFWMD Water Adventure)
                Session 2:      June 17 – 20 (Wimpy Animals, Outdoor Skills, Survival, and SWFWMD Water
Adventure)
                Session 3:      June 24 – 27 (Outdoor Skills, Survival, and SWFWMD Water Adventure)
Additional camps may be added as needed.

HOW:  Applications with payments, notarized medical release forms, and photography permission forms will be accepted on a first-come, first-serve basis.  We will not be able to “reserve spots in the camps.”  DEADLINE:  Complete applications with payments must be received by May 10, 2019.  Mail complete applications with payments (check or money orders) to:

**NOTE:  ALL programs are conducted in an outdoor environment.  Please apply sunscreen and bug spray prior to arrival at Nature’s Classroom.  Free breakfast and a free bagged lunch with milk/juice will be provided daily by SNS or you may bring your own.
